If the shifts in you Mercedes-Benz are excessively hard, or so soft that the transmission seems to slip, the cause may be a failed modulator valve.
This valve is located on the side of the transmission, and is used to control the working pressure of the automatic transmission. Over time, the rubber diaphragm inside of this modulator valve can be torn. Once this happens, the valve will no longer control pressure properly, as the correct vacuum will not be drawn on the diaphragm.
